Our research is focused on elucidating the importance of redox control of post-translational histone modifications and the intricate control of epigenetic mechanisms by oxidative stress. Specifically, our research is aimed to elucidate how oxidative stress and inflammation drive the dysregulation of epigenetic mechanisms, which in turn contribute to diseases (Free Rad. Biol. Med. 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021).Moreover, we are looking for potential epigenetic biomarkers which can improve precision medicine in sepsis. Particularly, we are investigating how extracellular histones contributes to tissue damage and organ dysfunction during sepsis, as well as the potential of extracellular histones to become diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for sepsis and septic shock. In addition, DNA methylation and microRNAs are analyzed by EPIC850K methylation arrays and smallRNA-seq to further clarify the immune response dysregulation and immunosuppression in septic patients. Generation of 3D biomodels (i.e. spheroids and organoids) as models to study organ damage in sepsis. Research on the epigenetic mechanisms related with inflammation and immunosuppression. Working group in EpiENoD strategy to create the first reference methylome of Spanish population.
